A familiar landmark is returning to Currumbin Beach as the Gold Coast prepares to officially open its newly upgraded beachfront boardwalk. The Sun Spirit statue, a replica of the bronze sculpture that disappeared from the area in 2025, has been installed at the renewed Currumbin Creek South foreshore.

The original sculpture, created by artist Frank Miles in 2006, had become a recognisable feature of the Currumbin beachfront before disappearing in March 2025. Following community interest and a successful fundraising effort, a replacement replica was donated and is now returning to the foreshore.

The statue's return is part of a much larger $7.7 million Currumbin Creek South foreshore renewal project. The redevelopment includes a new beachfront footpath, improved access to the beach, a pedestrian plaza and viewing platform, upgraded showers and seating, and significant coastal infrastructure improvements.

The renewed area includes a 210-metre training wall and a 110-metre beachfront footpath, designed to improve both coastal resilience and accessibility. The project has also received federal funding through the Disaster Ready Fund, supporting improvements intended to help protect the foreshore from coastal hazards.

The upgraded precinct is scheduled to open to the public at midday on Friday, giving residents and visitors an opportunity to experience the improved beachfront facilities. The return of the Sun Spirit statue is expected to be one of the highlights of the opening celebrations.

The timing also coincides with preparations for the Swell Sculpture Festival, which is scheduled to take place along the Gold Coast coastline from September 11 to September 20. The renewed Currumbin beachfront is therefore expected to attract increased attention from residents, visitors and art enthusiasts during the coming weeks.

Local representatives have welcomed the completion of the project, highlighting the importance of maintaining the Gold Coast's coastal areas while improving public access and facilities.

The project demonstrates the continuing investment in Gold Coast beaches and foreshore infrastructure. Alongside providing improved recreational facilities, the upgrades are intended to strengthen the area's resilience and make the beachfront more accessible for the community.

For Currumbin residents, the return of the Sun Spirit statue also restores a familiar piece of local identity after its disappearance more than a year ago.
