Great Northern Hotel Destroyed in Major Townsville CBD Fire

Emergency crews battled a major blaze at the heritage-listed building, with Flinders Street remaining closed because of safety concerns.

A major fire destroyed the heritage-listed Great Northern Hotel in Townsville’s central business district on Friday morning, 11 September 2026. Queensland Fire Department crews were called to the building on Flinders Street at about 6:14am. Firefighters spent several hours battling the blaze as heavy smoke spread through the Townsville CBD. The two-storey hotel was built in 1900 and was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. The building had been closed since another fire in 2015. During Friday’s fire, the roof and both floors of the hotel collapsed. Fire and Rescue Townsville Inspector Damien Phillips said the building was not salvageable because of extensive structural damage, including large cracks in the concrete and brickwork. Firefighters initially entered the building to assess the situation but were later withdrawn because of the risk of further collapse. Crews continued working from outside while managing the fire and protecting nearby properties. A neighbouring café was also affected by the fire and sustained minor damage. Firefighters were able to prevent the flames from destroying the nearby business. The fire also affected emergency workers. One firefighter was taken to hospital with a minor injury. Other reports said additional firefighters received medical treatment during the response. A Public Safety Preservation Act declaration was made at about 8:40am as the emergency response continued. Police warned members of the public to avoid streets surrounding the burning building because of heavy smoke and safety concerns. Several roads around the Townsville CBD were affected while emergency crews worked at the scene. The restrictions were linked to the fire response, debris and concerns about the stability of the damaged structure. Additional firefighting crews were brought in from Ingham and the Burdekin to assist Townsville crews. The Great Northern Hotel had been an important part of Townsville’s built heritage for more than a century. The building was closely associated with the city’s social and commercial history and stood near the Townsville railway station. The hotel had already suffered extensive damage in a fire in 2015 and had remained closed since then. Despite its condition, the building retained heritage significance and was recognised as an important historic structure in the city. Fire investigators attended the site after the blaze was brought under control. The cause of the September 2026 fire remains under investigation. Emergency crews remained at the location after the main fire was brought under control to monitor the site and deal with remaining hotspots and safety risks. Authorities advised members of the public to stay away from the affected area while emergency and investigative operations continued. The destruction of the Great Northern Hotel represents a significant loss of a heritage-listed building in Townsville. The investigation into the circumstances of the fire is continuing.
