Two people have died and a woman has been left in a critical condition following a serious three-vehicle crash at Suffolk Park, south of Byron Bay, on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to Broken Head Road at approximately 10:30am on 31 October after reports of a collision involving three vehicles. Police and ambulance crews arrived at the scene and found that two drivers had died from their injuries.

According to New South Wales Police, the deceased were the driver of one vehicle, believed to be a woman in her 50s, and the driver of a second vehicle, believed to be a man in his 60s. Their identities had not been formally confirmed when police released the initial information.

A female passenger travelling in the second vehicle, believed to be in her 60s, suffered critical injuries. Paramedics provided emergency treatment before she was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital for further medical care.

The occupants of the third vehicle were reported to be uninjured, although the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

The crash prompted a major emergency response, with NSW Ambulance, police and other emergency personnel attending the scene. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also called to assist with the response.

Police established a crime scene on Broken Head Road and began investigating how the three vehicles became involved in the collision. Investigators are examining the circumstances leading up to the crash and may seek information from people who witnessed the incident.

Broken Head Road was closed between Beech Drive and Broken Head Reserve Road while emergency crews attended the scene and police conducted their investigation. Motorists were directed to use alternative routes, with authorities asking the public to avoid the affected section of road.

The incident has also prompted an appeal for witnesses and drivers who may have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision. Police are particularly interested in information that could help establish the movements of the vehicles before the crash.

Anyone with relevant information has been asked to contact Tweed/Byron Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner as part of the investigation into the two deaths.
