A man has been charged following an investigation into multiple alleged car break-ins across Sydney's CBD and surrounding inner-city suburbs.

Police said detectives from the Sydney City Police Area Command began investigating a series of incidents involving vehicles in Pyrmont, Ultimo and Haymarket earlier this month.

The alleged break-ins occurred between September 10 and September 19, with police estimating that property worth about $15,000 was involved across the incidents.

Following inquiries, officers arrested a 40-year-old man at Mountain Street Reserve in Ultimo at about 8:15pm on September 19.

Police said they seized a high-end handbag during the arrest. The handbag was allegedly stolen shortly before the man's arrest and contained property valued at about $12,000.

The investigation involved detectives and a proactive crime team examining reports of vehicles being entered without the owners' consent. Officers subsequently identified a man they believed was connected to the alleged offences.

The man was taken to Day Street Police Station following his arrest and charged with a series of offences.

The charges include four counts of allegedly damaging property, four counts of stealing, four counts of entering a vehicle or boat without the owner's consent, 10 counts relating to allegedly obtaining property by deception and one count of allegedly hindering or resisting police.

The number of charges reflects the range of alleged offences identified during the investigation.

The man was refused bail following his arrest. He appeared before the Bail Division Court on September 21, where bail was again refused.

He is scheduled to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on September 28.

The investigation highlights ongoing police efforts to identify people allegedly involved in property offences across Sydney's busy inner-city areas. Pyrmont, Ultimo and Haymarket contain residential buildings, commercial properties, entertainment venues and large numbers of parked vehicles, making vehicle-related theft investigations an important part of local policing.

At this stage, the allegations against the accused have not been determined by a court. A person charged with an offence is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty according to law.

Police have encouraged people to take reasonable precautions with valuables left inside vehicles, particularly in busy urban areas. Leaving bags and other valuable items visible can increase the potential attraction for opportunistic theft.
