Victoria Police are investigating another suspected arson attack in Melbourne after a vehicle was set on fire at a residential property in Taylors Lakes, marking the sixth consecutive evening of reported fire-related attacks across the city.

Emergency services were called to a property on Nepean Court shortly after 11 pm on Friday, 9 October 2026. Firefighters arrived to find a vehicle burning inside a double garage. The fire caused extensive damage to the vehicle and part of the house, although no injuries were reported.

Police believe an unknown offender reversed a vehicle into the garage before setting the area alight and leaving in a dark-coloured SUV. Investigators are working to establish who was responsible and whether the incident is connected to other recent attacks.

In a separate incident early on Saturday morning, emergency services responded to reports of a factory fire on Valley Street in Oakleigh South at approximately 3 am. Police said the fire caused minor property damage and no injuries were reported. A 53-year-old man was arrested at Clayton Railway Station a short time later. Further details about potential charges were not included in the initial report.

The incidents occurred amid a broader series of vehicle and residential firebombings reported in Melbourne in recent weeks. Other affected suburbs have included Springvale, Oakleigh East, Reservoir, Maidstone and Keilor. The repeated incidents have raised concerns among residents and prompted increased attention from police and government officials.

Authorities have been investigating whether the attacks are linked to organised crime and the illegal tobacco trade. Deakin University criminologist James Martin told ABC News that enforcement against illicit markets can sometimes coincide with violence between criminal groups. However, a direct connection between the individual fires and the illegal tobacco crackdown has not been established.

Victoria has recently introduced additional powers for inspectors and police to shut down businesses suspected of selling illicit tobacco. Police have also reported substantial seizures of cigarettes, vapes, loose tobacco and cash as part of enforcement efforts. Investigators are examining whether the attacks involve intimidation, disputes between rival groups or other motives.

The latest incidents underline the risk that deliberate fires can pose to residents, neighbouring properties and emergency responders. A fire inside a residential garage can spread to a home and nearby buildings, potentially placing occupants in danger even when no injuries occur.

Police investigations into the Taylors Lakes and Oakleigh South incidents are continuing. Authorities have not confirmed whether the two fires are connected, and the arrest in relation to the Oakleigh South incident does not establish guilt.
