providing much-needed support to regional health services. A new workforce initiative is helping address chronic staffing shortages in rural South Australia by recruiting experienced nurses from the Philippines to work and train in the Eyre Peninsula town of Cleve. The pilot program, led by the South Australian Skills Commission in partnership with the Eyre and Far North Local Health Network, District Council of Cleve and TAFE SA, has recruited five trainee nurses, with two already working at Cleve District Hospital. The nurses were previously registered in the Philippines, but their qualifications were not recognised by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Through the program, they are completing Australian-accredited training that will allow them to qualify as enrolled nurses and eventually seek full registration. Officials say the three-year initiative could become a model for addressing workforce shortages in other sectors, while providing regional communities with improved access to essential healthcare services
