Newcastle City Police have charged a 14-year-old boy following an investigation into a series of alleged thefts from local businesses dating back to March 2026.
According to New South Wales Police, investigators examined several incidents they believed were connec ted. The alleged thefts involved a range of items, including alcohol, clothing, bank cards and cash taken from café tip jars. Police estimate the total value of the property involved at more than $11,500. The investigation was conducted by officers from Newcastle City Police, who worked to establish whether the separate incidents were linked and identify a suspect.
At approximately 9:15 am on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, officers from the Newcastle City Proactive Crime Team attended a home in Broadmeadow, a suburb of Newcastle. A 14-year-old boy was arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station for further inquiries.
Following the investigation, the teenager was charged with 20 alleged offences. These include 17 counts of shoplifting involving property valued at $2,000 or less, two counts of larceny involving property valued at $2,000 or less, and one count of dishonestly obtaining property by deception.
The charges cover alleged incidents investigated over several months. Police have not stated that every stolen item has been recovered, and the reported total represents the estimated value of property involved in the investigation.
The teenager was granted strict conditional bail and is scheduled to appear before a children's court on 2 November 2026. Because the accused is 14, the matter will proceed through the youth justice system. Children's courts handle criminal allegations involving young people, with proceedings subject to rules designed to protect minors' privacy and consider their age.
Shoplifting and other property offences can affect small businesses through lost stock, disruption and the time required to report incidents and assist police. Cafés and independent retailers may be particularly affected when cash or goods are taken from premises serving customers throughout the day.
Police investigations into repeated thefts can involve comparing reports from different businesses, examining available security footage and gathering information about the alleged movement of stolen property. In this case, police said the incidents had been under investigation since March.
The charge of dishonestly obtaining property by deception is separate from the shoplifting and larceny allegations. The precise circumstances of that allegation would need to be established through the court process.
The case remains before the courts. The teenager has been charged but has not been convicted, and the allegations must be proven through the legal process. As the matter involves a child, identifying details should not be published beyond information lawfully released by authorities.
