Rockhampton’s busy Park Avenue precinct has a smoother, safer surface today as the $2 million road reconstruction along Main and Haynes Streets officially wraps up. The project delivered 3800 square metres of new asphalt, upgraded stormwater drainage, and renewed kerbing – improvements Mayor Tony Williams says will benefit locals going to work, school, and visiting the region. The completion comes as part of a wider safety push, with more than $3.5 million in federal Black Spot funding already rolling out across the city, including works on Dean Street and planned treatments for Razorback Road in Moongan.
At the same time, Rockhampton police have issued an urgent appeal for public assistance following an assault at a shopping centre on Yaamba Road. Around 1:30 pm on Tuesday, 16 June, an 18-year-old security guard was allegedly assaulted after intervening in a stealing incident. The guard suffered non-life-threatening injuries but was shaken by the attack. Detectives are asking anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage, or other information to come forward.
In a separate community announcement, the Rockhampton River Festival has been deferred for 2026. Organisers cited significant cost increases and staffing pressures, with projected event costs nearly doubling to over $780,000. Instead, Council will deliver smaller activations across the CBD and riverfront throughout the year.
Residents are reminded to stay aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to Police Link or Crime Stoppers. Meanwhile, the council encourages locals to enjoy the newly upgraded roads and to keep an eye out for upcoming community events as alternative festival plans are finalised.
