The Royal Australian Mint has been penalised over a serious workplace safety incident that nearly resulted in a worker's death at its Canberra facility. The case stems from an accident in May 2019 when a three-tonne coin press became unstable while being moved and fell, narrowly missing a worker standing nearby.
According to workplace safety regulator Comcare, the incident occurred in the basement of the Mint when a contractor was using a forklift to transport the heavy coin press. During the move, the machine became unbalanced and toppled, creating an immediate risk of fatal injury. The worker escaped being struck by only a small margin.
Following an investigation, Comcare alleged the Mint failed to provide a safe system of work, a safe working environment and adequate safety documentation relating to the transport of the machinery. Prosecutors argued that better planning and safety controls could have prevented the near-tragedy.
The matter proceeded through the courts, where the Mint was found to have breached its obligations under federal workplace health and safety laws. The recent decision resulted in a financial penalty exceeding $1 million, highlighting the seriousness of the safety failures and the potentially catastrophic consequences of the incident.
Workplace safety experts note that moving heavy industrial equipment requires detailed risk assessments, specialised procedures and clear communication between contractors and employees.
