Plans for a potential golf course and surf-wellness retreat on South Stradbroke Island have sparked debate across the Gold Coast. The concept reportedly includes more than 25 buildings and forms part of a broader proposed Whole of Island Master Plan.

The proposal has divided community opinion. A recent survey found around 57 per cent of respondents supported the concept, while environmental and community groups have raised concerns about the potential impact on the island's natural environment.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate and outgoing council CEO Tim Baker have reportedly explored nature-based tourism opportunities connected with the island. However, some councillors have questioned the level of transparency surrounding discussions about the proposed development.

Acting Mayor Mark Hammel has stressed that there is currently no formal development proposal and that public consultation would be required if plans progress. Environmental groups remain concerned about protecting South Stradbroke's relatively undeveloped landscape.
