A serious police incident in Southport on Queensland’s Gold Coast has resulted in a 53-year-old man being charged after an alleged domestic disturbance escalated into a residential fire and a confrontation with officers.

Emergency services were called to a residential unit at approximately 5:30 pm on Sunday, 18 October 2026, following reports of a disturbance. Police allege the man threatened a 54-year-old man known to him while armed with a knife. The second man reportedly escaped from the unit and contacted authorities.

When officers arrived, they helped evacuate an 81-year-old woman from the property. She was not physically injured during the incident.

Police began negotiating with the 53-year-old man, who allegedly remained inside the unit. During the negotiations, an explosion was heard. Investigators believe the blast may have been caused by gas being ignited, although the precise circumstances require further examination.

A fire subsequently developed inside the property. Police allege the man then approached officers with a knife, creating a dangerous situation for the responding team.

Three police officers were taken to hospital as a precaution after inhaling smoke. They were later assessed and cleared to return to work. Authorities praised the officers for their actions during the incident, particularly their efforts to protect the safety of people inside the property.

The fire was eventually extinguished, and the man was taken into custody. He was subsequently transported to Gold Coast University Hospital for a medical assessment.

Following the incident, the 53-year-old was charged with five offences. These include two counts of serious assault on police officers, an offence involving endangering property by fire in a domestic-violence context, and unlawful possession of weapons. Police have not established every detail of the incident publicly, and the allegations will be considered through the court process.

The accused is expected to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on Monday, 19 October 2026.

The incident has highlighted the risks faced by emergency workers responding to volatile domestic disturbances, particularly when weapons and fire are involved. Police have emphasised the importance of protecting residents and officers while attempting to resolve dangerous situations.

Investigations into the fire and the events leading up to the confrontation are continuing. Authorities will assess the available evidence as the legal proceedings progress.

The charges remain allegations, and the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
