An 18-year-old man has been refused bail after being charged over an alleged armed home invasion in regional New South Wales that left a woman injured
An 18-year-old man has appeared before a court after being charged in connection with an alleged violent home invasion in Armidale, in the New England region of New South Wales. Police announced the charges on Friday, 16 October 2026, after an investigation into the incident and other alleged break-and-enter offences.
The original incident occurred at approximately 1:45 am on Thursday, 8 October, when officers from the New England Police District were called to a home on Hunt Avenue following reports of a break-in and assault.
Police were told that a group of alleged intruders, armed with knives, entered the property and demanded car keys from the occupants. During the incident, a woman in her 40s was allegedly assaulted with a baseball bat, suffering cuts to her head and injuries to her arm and wrist. The intruders reportedly fled on foot after allegedly taking mobile phones, a wallet, alcohol and other belongings from the residence.
NSW Ambulance paramedics assessed the injured woman before taking her to Armidale Hospital for treatment. She was reported to be in a stable condition and was subsequently released. A woman in her 70s and a man in his 20s were also inside the home, but no further injuries were reported.
Following several days of inquiries, police executed a search warrant at a unit on Marshall Avenue in Armidale at approximately 10:30 am on Thursday, 15 October. Officers arrested an 18-year-old man at the property and seized items that investigators believe may be relevant to their inquiries.
Later that afternoon, at approximately 3:30 pm, officers executed a second search warrant at another Armidale residence. Additional items connected to the investigation were seized. The teenager was charged with aggravated break and enter while armed, offences relating to committing and disseminating material about a serious indictable offence, failing to comply with a digital evidence access order, and breaching bail conditions.
Police also laid additional charges relating to an alleged aggravated break-and-enter offence in Nambucca Heads in March 2026 and an alleged attempted aggravated break-and-enter offence in West Kempsey in April 2026. These allegations are separate matters that will need to be considered through the legal process.
The man was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Court 5 on Friday, 16 October. The court formally refused bail, and he is due to return to Armidale Local Court on Wednesday, 9 December 2026. Investigators continue to examine the evidence gathered during the searches and the circumstances surrounding the alleged offences. Police have not concluded the broader investigation, and further developments may follow.
Home invasions involving weapons can place residents at significant risk, particularly when occupants are confronted inside their own homes. Police encourage anyone who witnesses a crime or has relevant information to contact authorities rather than confronting suspected offenders.
The charges remain allegations, and the accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless the offences are proven in court.
