In a historic demographic shift, Generation Z (ages 18–29) has officially overtaken Millennials as the cohort most eager to abandon capital cities for a life in the regions. According to the 2026 Regional Australia Institute (RAI) annual snapshot, nearly half (49%) of Gen Z Australians are now contemplating a move, driven by a desire for affordable housing, nature, and faster career progression. With over 64,000 regional job vacancies and a growing appetite for flexible work, the traditional "retirement tree-change" has been replaced by a youth-led exodus seeking a better work-life balance and a path to financial independence.
