Three boys have been charged following an alleged aggravated break and enter at a home in Bourke, western New South Wales, during the early hours of Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
NSW Police said officers attached to the Central North Police District were called to a property on Mertin Street, Bourke, at about 2:30am after receiving reports that a group had allegedly entered the home. Police said several items were taken during the incident, including a handbag, wallet and car keys belonging to an SUV.
Police allege that a 57-year-old woman who was inside the property confronted the group after they entered the home. The group then allegedly left the property in the SUV. The woman was not physically injured during the incident.
Officers established a crime scene at the Bourke property and began investigating the alleged break-in. Detectives and local police then conducted inquiries to identify the vehicle and people allegedly involved.
The investigation led police to Cobar, where officers stopped the allegedly stolen SUV on Marshall Crescent shortly before 6am. A 16-year-old boy was arrested at the location.
A short time later, police arrested three additional boys on Rankin Street, Cobar. The group included two 13-year-olds and one 15-year-old. All four boys were taken to Cobar Police Station while investigators determined the alleged involvement of each person.
Three of the boys were subsequently charged.
The 16-year-old was charged with aggravated break and enter with intent while knowing a person was present, being carried in a conveyance taken without the owner's consent, and dishonestly obtaining property by deception. Police said he was refused bail and was due to appear before a children's court on Wednesday.
The 15-year-old was charged with aggravated break and enter, taking and driving a conveyance without consent, dishonestly obtaining property by deception, hindering or resisting a police officer and allegedly breaching bail. He was also refused bail and was scheduled to appear before a children's court.
One of the 13-year-old boys was charged with entering a building or land with intent to commit an indictable offence, two counts of entering enclosed lands and allegedly breaching bail. He was refused bail and was due to appear before a children's court.
The second 13-year-old boy was released pending further inquiries and has not been charged at this stage.
Police said investigations into the alleged incident remain ongoing. Detectives will continue examining the circumstances of the break-in, the alleged taking of the SUV and the involvement of the people arrested in Cobar.
Because the accused are minors, the matter will be dealt with through the children's justice system. The allegations have not been proven in court, and each accused person is entitled to the presumption of innocence.
The incident highlights the rapid police response following the alleged overnight break-in, with officers locating the allegedly stolen vehicle roughly three and a half hours after the initial report and making arrests in Cobar.
