Police in the Australian Capital Territory are investigating an alleged burglary and animal cruelty incident at a rural property near Tuggeranong after several sheep were found injured in a holding pen. The investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year-old man and the identification of two other alleged participants, according to an ACT Policing statement released on 9 October 2026. ACT Policing
Police said the property owner contacted authorities on 17 September after discovering injured sheep. Investigators allege that several people had entered the property the previous night and, with the assistance of dogs, rounded up eight sheep and moved them into a holding pen.
According to police, multiple sheep were deliberately injured while inside the pen. One sheep died, while another had to be euthanised because its injuries were too severe. The incident also involved an alleged unlawful entry into the property's residence, where police said the interior had been ransacked and considerable disruption caused.
The case was investigated by ACT Policing's Major Crime officers. On Thursday, 8 October, officers executed a search warrant at a property in Richardson, a suburb of Canberra. Police said they seized items believed to be relevant to the investigation.
An 18-year-old man from Richardson was arrested during the search. He is due to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday, 9 October, charged with several alleged offences. These include aggravated animal cruelty offences relating to death and serious injury, aggravated burglary with intent to damage property, possession of a prohibited firearm, trafficking in a trafficable quantity of cannabis, and several motor vehicle and driving offences.
A 16-year-old was also arrested in connection with the investigation and released while further inquiries continue. Police said a 27-year-old man, who is already in custody for unrelated matters, is also expected to be charged in relation to the incident.
Authorities have not publicly established the full roles allegedly played by each person, and the charges against the adult remain allegations to be tested through the court process. Any findings of guilt will be determined by the relevant legal proceedings.
The case has raised concerns about the protection of livestock and the seriousness of incidents involving alleged deliberate animal injury. Rural property owners rely on secure fencing, gates and other protective measures to safeguard animals, but incidents involving trespassing can create significant distress and financial losses.
Police are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers ACT, quoting reference number 8501989.
The 18-year-old's court appearance is the next step in the legal process. Investigators may provide further information as the case progresses, subject to court requirements and the protection of the identities of any young people involved.
