Two men have been charged in connection with an alleged armed robbery at a business in Hughes, Canberra, following a police investigation that led to a dangerous vehicle pursuit and the seizure of suspected illegal weapons.

According to ACT Policing, officers were called to the business at approximately 6:45 pm on Monday, 5 October, after staff reported a robbery. Police allege that a man entered the premises, demanded cash and displayed what appeared to be a black firearm concealed beneath his clothing. The man allegedly took the cash till before leaving with another person in a dark station wagon. ACT Policing

The investigation continued over the following days as police worked to identify the people allegedly involved and locate the vehicle.

On Thursday evening, 8 October, officers spotted a Subaru in Turner and attempted to intercept it. Police said the driver failed to stop, triggering a prolonged incident involving dangerous driving across several Canberra suburbs, including Belconnen and Gungahlin.

During the incident, police allege the vehicle travelled well above the posted speed limits. Authorities also allege that the Subaru was deliberately reversed into a marked police vehicle on Gungahlin Drive in Mitchell, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

Police pursued the vehicle towards Lyneham, where it collided with an unmarked police vehicle and came to a stop. Officers then arrested the 37-year-old driver. Police reported finding a black illegal firearm on the ground beside him during the arrest.

The driver was charged with multiple alleged offences, including dangerous driving, damaging a police vehicle, firearm possession offences and joint participation in aggravated robbery.

In the early hours of Friday, 9 October, investigators executed a search warrant at a home in Taylor belonging to the suspected second participant in the robbery. Police said they seized four illegal gel blasters, ammunition, a prohibited weapon, a mobile phone and items suspected to be stolen.

A 32-year-old man was arrested following the search and charged with alleged joint participation in aggravated robbery and breaching good-behaviour obligations.

The investigation remains significant because it involves allegations of an armed robbery as well as a subsequent incident in which police vehicles were damaged during a pursuit. Investigators will continue examining the evidence seized and the alleged roles of both men.

Police have asked anyone with information about the robbery or related events to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference number 8519336. Information can be provided anonymously.

The allegations have not yet been proven in court. Both accused men are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty through the legal process.
