Visitors have just a few months left to enjoy the Wollongong Art Gallery before it temporarily closes for approximately 12 months to undergo major building upgrades aimed at preserving one of regional Australia's most important public art collections.
The gallery, located within Wollongong's cultural precinct, is scheduled to close in November 2026 while contractors replace the ageing roof and install a modern climate-control system throughout the heritage-listed building. The project is expected to take about a year, with the gallery planning to reopen in November 2027.
The upgrade has been planned to address long-standing infrastructure issues. Council says the existing roof has experienced leaks during wet weather, while the ageing air-conditioning system no longer provides the stable temperature and humidity levels required for the long-term preservation of valuable artworks. The improvements are intended to protect the gallery's permanent collection and enable it to host more significant travelling exhibitions in the future.
During the closure, thousands of artworks will be carefully removed from display and placed into secure storage before construction begins. Specialist staff will oversee the relocation process to ensure paintings, sculptures, ceramics and other collection items remain protected throughout the works. Safety fencing and construction hoardings will be installed around parts of the site while work is underway.
Wollongong City Council says the project represents an important investment in the city's cultural infrastructure. Mayor Tania Brown said the upgrades would extend the life of the heritage-listed building while improving conditions for visitors and allowing the gallery to attract higher-profile exhibitions from across Australia and overseas. Better environmental controls are also expected to strengthen the gallery's ability to borrow artworks from other institutions that require strict conservation standards.
Although the building will be closed to the public, gallery staff will continue working behind the scenes throughout the construction period. Planning is already underway for an expanded program of exhibitions, events and community activities to celebrate the gallery's 50th anniversary in 2028. Council hopes reopening the upgraded facility ahead of those celebrations will allow visitors to experience a refreshed venue while showcasing major new exhibitions.
The gallery closure forms part of a broader program of works across Wollongong's civic precinct. Nearby Wollongong Town Hall is also undergoing extensive roof replacement and air-conditioning upgrades, although the projects are being staged to minimise disruption to community events and public access wherever possible. Some pedestrian areas around the precinct will remain accessible while construction continues.
Council is encouraging residents and visitors to make the most of the remaining exhibition program before the November closure. Gallery admission will continue to be free until works commence, after which updates on construction progress and future reopening plans will be provided through the gallery and council websites.
