A police operation was launched in Sydney’s Inner West on Monday after a man was allegedly stabbed outside a cinema in Newtown, prompting road closures and a significant emergency response in the busy inner-city area.

Emergency services were called to the area around 11:40am on 5 October 2026 following reports of an assault near the Dendy cinema on King Street. Police said a 48-year-old man had allegedly suffered a stab wound to his hand during an incident involving a woman. The injured man was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital. He was reported to be in a stable condition.

Following the initial incident, officers searched the surrounding area and located a 27-year-old woman who was allegedly carrying a knife. Police directed the woman to put down the weapon, but she allegedly failed to comply with the instructions. Officers then used a Taser to bring her under control before arresting her.

The woman was taken to Newtown Police Station, where police began further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident. At the time of the latest reports, investigations were continuing and authorities had not indicated that the circumstances leading to the alleged stabbing had been fully established.

The incident also caused disruption around King Street, one of Newtown’s busiest commercial and transport corridors. Police established a crime scene and temporarily closed the road in both directions. Traffic was diverted away from the affected section, while buses were also required to alter their routes during the police operation.

The incident occurred during the daytime in a heavily used part of Newtown, where restaurants, shops, businesses and public transport services operate throughout the day. The police response therefore had an immediate effect on people travelling through the area.

Authorities have urged the public to follow police directions while investigations continue. The circumstances surrounding the alleged attack remain subject to the police investigation, and information about the motive or events leading up to the confrontation has not been confirmed.

The latest information indicates that one man was injured and transported to hospital in a stable condition, while the woman was arrested after police allegedly found her with a knife nearby. Further details may emerge as investigators continue speaking with witnesses and examining the crime scene.
