A woman has been arrested and charged in Mildura after Australian authorities intercepted an alleged illegal drug importation that was reportedly destined for the regional Victorian city.

Victoria Police said the 33-year-old woman was arrested at a Mildura address on Friday morning, September 18, following a multi-agency investigation involving Victoria Police and the Australian Border Force. The case was reported publicly on 19 September 2026.

According to police, the investigation began after Australian Border Force officers intercepted a package containing approximately 500 millilitres of 1,4-Butanediol, also known as BDO or “bute”, at Melbourne Airport in June. Authorities allege the substance was being imported illegally and was ultimately destined for Mildura.

The Australian Federal Police describes 1,4-Butanediol as a harmful substance that can be associated with serious health risks, including overdoses. The substance is converted by the body into GHB and can cause severe effects when consumed. Because of those risks, Australian authorities regulate its importation and possession.

Following the airport interception, investigators from multiple agencies continued examining the circumstances surrounding the shipment and identifying people allegedly connected with it. Detectives from the Mildura Divisional Response Unit subsequently arrested the woman at a property in Mildura on Friday morning.

Police charged the woman with the Commonwealth offence of importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled substance. The charge relates to the alleged importation intercepted at Melbourne Airport.

The woman has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Mildura Magistrates Court on December 16, 2026. As the matter is before the courts, the allegations have not been proven.

The investigation demonstrates the cooperation between federal and state authorities in cases involving substances allegedly entering Australia through the international border. Australian Border Force officers are responsible for detecting and intercepting prohibited and controlled goods entering the country, while state and federal police can investigate people suspected of involvement.

Melbourne Airport was the point where the alleged importation was intercepted, while Mildura became the focus of the subsequent police investigation because authorities say the substance was destined for the regional city.

The case also highlights the role of intelligence-led investigations. Rather than ending with the seizure of the substance at the airport, investigators continued examining the alleged supply chain and worked to identify people potentially connected to the shipment.

Police have not suggested that the substance reached the intended destination. Instead, authorities intercepted the alleged importation before it could enter the community through the suspected route.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the woman will have the opportunity to respond to the charge through the court process. Further developments are expected when the matter returns to the Mildura Magistrates Court.
