Victorian Police have arrested eight people following an alleged group assault involving an off-duty police officer, prompting a criminal investigation.
Victoria Police have arrested eight people following an investigation into an alleged assault involving a 19-year-old off-duty police officer in Shepparton, northern Victoria. The investigation has attracted attention because the alleged victim was a young police officer who was not working at the time of the incident.
According to Victoria Police, the incident occurred at approximately 12:30 am on Sunday, 25 October 2026, along Maude Street in Shepparton.
Police allege that an individual was riding an orange motorbike erratically along Maude Street near licensed premises. The 19-year-old off-duty police officer reportedly approached the rider and asked him to leave the area.
Following the interaction, the officer was allegedly surrounded by a group of males. The situation escalated, with the officer and his 19-year-old friend allegedly being punched in the face and kicked by members of the group.
Both young men were able to leave the area after the alleged assault. They were subsequently transported to hospital for medical treatment. Victoria Police confirmed that their injuries were not life-threatening and both have since been released.
Detectives from the Shepparton Crime Investigation Unit launched an investigation to identify those allegedly involved. As part of their inquiries, officers carried out searches at eight properties across the Greater Shepparton region.
During the investigation, police arrested several people, including a 16-year-old boy, three 17-year-old boys and two 18-year-old men. These individuals were interviewed by detectives and are expected to face charges through summons.
A 20-year-old man from Kialla was also arrested but was later released while police continued their inquiries.
In addition, a 17-year-old boy attended a police station on Friday, where he was interviewed and released pending a summons.
Police also seized several items during the investigation, including mobile phones, an off-road motorcycle and an imitation firearm. These items are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation as detectives examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.
The incident has raised concerns about violence in public areas, particularly around entertainment venues and licensed premises. Maude Street is an important commercial area in Shepparton, and incidents involving groups of alleged offenders can create concerns among local residents and businesses.
The investigation also highlights the risks faced by police officers outside their official working hours. Although the officer was off duty, the alleged assault has become part of a wider criminal investigation involving multiple suspects.
Victoria Police are continuing their inquiries into the circumstances of the incident. The people arrested have not been convicted, and any charges must be determined through the appropriate court process.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant information about the incident to assist investigators.
The case remains an important public safety issue for the Shepparton community as police work to establish the full circumstances of the alleged attack.
