A woman has been charged following a fatal road collision in Mildura, almost ten months after the crash claimed the life of an elderly passenger.
Detectives from Victoria Police's Major Collision Investigation Unit announced that a 68-year-old woman from Mildura had been charged with dangerous driving causing death and failing to give way after an extensive investigation into the September 2025 collision.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:00pm on 15 September 2025 at the intersection of Deakin Avenue and the Twentieth Street culvert in Mildura. According to investigators, a Mitsubishi Lancer and a Kia Sportage collided at the intersection under circumstances that were later examined by specialist collision investigators.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene. The 55-year-old female driver of the Kia Sportage suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment. However, her 79-year-old male passenger, also from Mildura, sustained critical injuries and later died in hospital despite medical efforts to save him.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 67-year-old Mildura woman, was also taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Following the collision, detectives commenced a detailed investigation involving forensic examinations, witness interviews and analysis of the circumstances surrounding the crash.
After months of investigation, police determined there was sufficient evidence to lay charges. On 8 July 2026, detectives formally charged the 68-year-old Mildura woman with dangerous driving causing death and failing to give way. Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances that allegedly led to the collision, as the matter is now before the courts.
The accused woman was granted bail and is scheduled to appear before the Mildura Magistrates' Court on 13 July 2026. Court proceedings will determine the allegations, and police have reminded the public that the charges remain allegations until tested before the court.
Victoria Police said the case demonstrates the ongoing work undertaken by the Major Collision Investigation Unit, which investigates fatal and serious crashes throughout the state. Such investigations often involve months of evidence gathering, expert analysis and consultation before any decision is made regarding criminal charges.
The incident also serves as another reminder of the devastating consequences of serious road crashes. Authorities continue to urge motorists to obey road rules, remain alert at intersections and always give way where required to help reduce fatalities and serious injuries on Victorian roads. Police say every road user has a responsibility to drive safely and protect others travelling throughout the community.
