A homicide investigation is underway after a woman was fatally stabbed at a residential property in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
Emergency services were called to a home on Delatite Court in Vermont shortly before 10:00pm on Tuesday, 7 July, following reports that a woman had been stabbed inside the property. When police and paramedics arrived, they found a 39-year-old woman with fatal injuries. Despite emergency responders attending the scene, she was pronounced dead.
A 39-year-old man was also located at the property. He received treatment from ambulance paramedics before being arrested and transported to hospital under police guard. Authorities have confirmed the man is expected to be interviewed by detectives once medically cleared. No charges had been laid at the time of the latest police update.
The investigation has been taken over by detectives from the Victoria Police Homicide Squad, who spent Wednesday examining the property and surrounding area. A crime scene was established around the home while forensic officers collected evidence and photographed the scene. Detectives remained at the address throughout the morning as investigations continued.
Victoria Police said early inquiries indicate the man and woman were known to each other, suggesting the incident was not a random attack. However, investigators have not disclosed the nature of their relationship or what events led to the fatal stabbing. Police said the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman's death remains ongoing.
Residents of the normally quiet Vermont neighbourhood described being shocked by the large emergency response. Police vehicles, forensic teams and detectives remained at the suburban street while officers conducted door-to-door inquiries and spoke with nearby residents who may have heard or witnessed anything before emergency crews arrived.
Authorities are appealing for anyone who may have information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers. Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who may have been in the Delatite Court area on Tuesday evening or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage that could assist the investigation.
The death adds to the number of homicide investigations currently being handled across Victoria this year. Police have emphasised that no conclusions should be drawn while detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. The arrested man remains under police guard in hospital, and further updates are expected once formal interviews have been completed.
Investigators have reassured the community there is no ongoing threat to public safety, with all known parties involved in the incident now accounted for. Police say the focus remains on establishing the full sequence of events leading to the woman's death and preparing a brief of evidence for the Coroner and any future court proceedings.
