A major police investigation is underway after a 35-year-old woman was found dead in the backyard of a residential property on Sunnybank Way in Pakenham, in Melbourne’s south-east.
Emergency services were called to the home at around 8:10am on Sunday, 5 July 2026, following reports that a woman had been found unresponsive. When paramedics arrived, they attempted to revive her, but she could not be saved and was declared deceased at the scene.
Victoria Police confirmed that detectives from the Homicide Squad have joined local officers to investigate the circumstances of her death. The scene was quickly cordoned off, with forensic specialists deployed to examine the property and collect evidence that may help determine what occurred.
A man who was present at the home at the time of the incident was taken to hospital for treatment and has spoken with police. Authorities have not confirmed his role or involvement, and investigators have stressed that the exact circumstances remain unclear pending further inquiries.
Police stated that the case is being treated as suspicious at this stage, which is standard procedure when the cause of death is not immediately known. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause and time of death, which will be central to the direction of the investigation.
Neighbours reported a significant emergency response, with multiple police vehicles and forensic units attending the normally quiet residential street. Some residents told reporters they were shocked by the scene and said they had not previously seen serious incidents in the area.
Investigators are now conducting door-to-door inquiries and reviewing CCTV or dashcam footage from surrounding streets. Police are also appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the area during the early hours of the morning to come forward.
Authorities have emphasised that it is too early to speculate on what led to the woman’s death. They have urged the public to avoid spreading rumours while forensic testing and interviews continue.
The incident has added to a series of recent homicide investigations across Victoria, highlighting ongoing concerns around sudden unexplained deaths in suburban areas. However, police have not drawn any links to other cases and say each investigation is being treated independently.
The investigation remains active, and updates are expected once forensic results and further interviews provide more clarity.
