A 51-year-old woman has been seriously injured after she was allegedly stabbed while travelling on a Route 1 tram through South Melbourne on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at about midday on 6 October 2026, while the tram was travelling along Eastern Road near Kings Way. Police allege a man attacked the woman with a kitchen knife while passengers were inside the moving tram. The tram stopped shortly afterwards, allowing emergency services to respond.

Witnesses reported a major police and emergency-services response in the area after the incident. Police arrested a 37-year-old man of no fixed address nearby following the alleged attack. Officers are expected to interview the man as part of their investigation.

The woman suffered a stab wound to the neck and was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital. Later reports said her injuries were not considered life-threatening, although the attack resulted in a serious injury. The woman had been travelling with her dog, which was not injured.

According to reports, the tram driver became aware that something was wrong after passengers raised the alarm. The tram doors were opened when it stopped, and the alleged attacker left the tram. Two passengers reportedly chased him before police arrived and arrested him.

The circumstances of the alleged attack are now being investigated by Victoria Police. Detectives are expected to examine available CCTV footage from the tram and surrounding area, as well as statements from passengers and other witnesses who were nearby at the time.

Police are also seeking information from members of the public who witnessed the incident or may have captured relevant footage on their phones. Anyone who was travelling on the Route 1 tram or was near Eastern Road and Kings Way around midday is being encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers.

The incident has prompted renewed concern about safety on Melbourne's public transport network, particularly following an apparently random attack occurring during the middle of the day. Passengers and transport workers have called for continued attention to safety and security across the tram network.

Police have not yet released a detailed motive for the alleged attack. Investigators will need to establish what happened immediately before the stabbing and determine the circumstances surrounding the interaction between the two people.

The 37-year-old man has not yet been convicted of any offence. The allegations remain subject to the legal process, and police investigations are continuing.
