A major police operation targeting retail crime in Wollongong CBD has resulted in 15 people being charged as authorities continue efforts to disrupt repeat offenders and improve safety for businesses, workers and shoppers across the Illawarra region.

The arrests were carried out as part of Operation Percentile, an intelligence-led NSW Police initiative designed to identify, disrupt and prevent ongoing retail theft activity. Officers from the Wollongong Proactive Crime Team conducted targeted patrols throughout Wollongong CBD between 8am and 4pm on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, focusing on areas where retail offences had been reported.

During the operation, police allege that 15 people were detected committing retail theft-related offences, including the alleged theft of groceries, clothing accessories and other retail items. The operation forms part of a broader state-wide approach aimed at addressing repeat offending and reducing the impact of theft on local businesses and the wider community.

Police said those arrested faced a range of alleged offences, including shoplifting, resisting arrest, possession of goods suspected of being stolen or unlawfully obtained, and breaches of bail conditions. Of the 15 people arrested, ten were issued Court Attendance Notices, while four received Criminal Infringement Notices.

One significant incident involved a 28-year-old man who police allege stole a Nike bag from a Wollongong store. Following his arrest, officers conducted a search and allegedly discovered identification cards belonging to other people. The man was charged with shoplifting, possession of goods suspected of being stolen or unlawfully obtained, and breach of bail. Police say he was refused bail and was scheduled to appear before Bail Division Court 3.

Retail crime has become an increasing concern for businesses across Australia, with shop owners and workers often facing financial losses, additional security costs and challenging interactions with alleged offenders. Police operations such as Operation Percentile aim to provide a visible presence in shopping areas while using intelligence gathered from previous incidents to identify individuals suspected of repeated offending.

Authorities have emphasised that retail workers should not place themselves at risk when dealing with suspected theft incidents. Instead, businesses are encouraged to report offences and provide information that can assist police investigations.

Community safety remains a key priority for NSW Police, with officers continuing to work with retailers, business groups and residents to address crime issues affecting local areas. Targeted operations allow police to focus resources on locations where offences are occurring and take action against people suspected of contributing to ongoing theft problems.

The Wollongong operation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by regional centres in managing retail crime while maintaining safe and welcoming public spaces. Police say investigations under Operation Percentile are continuing, with further action possible as inquiries progress.

Local businesses and community members are encouraged to report suspicious behaviour and provide information that may assist police in preventing further offences. Authorities say cooperation between police, retailers and the public is essential in reducing crime and protecting the Wollongong community.
