An adult man and two teenagers are facing court after an alleged arson attack at a home in Giralang, Canberra, that left residents fleeing the property with minor injuries.
ACT Policing said emergency services were called to a house in Gidjili Place, Giralang, at about 11:10am on Friday, 24 July 2026, following reports of a serious house fire. Police allege two males entered the home carrying jerry cans containing fuel, poured the substance throughout the property and then set the house alight.
Two female residents inside the property were able to escape the burning home and were treated for minor injuries. Police responded with multiple resources, including investigators and intelligence officers, to identify those allegedly involved.
Investigators used witness information and CCTV footage to establish that the two alleged offenders left the area in a silver Audi sedan, which was allegedly driven by a third male. With assistance from NSW Police, officers later stopped the vehicle on the Federal and Hume Highways.
Police said items including fuel-soaked clothing, lighters and face coverings were located inside the vehicle. The three occupants were arrested and appeared before NSW courts before being extradited back to the ACT to face further legal proceedings.
An 18-year-old man from Lethbridge Park, NSW, is facing charges in the ACT Magistrates Court, including arson and acts endangering life by throwing an inflammable substance. Two 17-year-old boys, one also from Lethbridge Park and another from Quakers Hill, NSW, are appearing in the ACT Children’s Court on similar charges.
Police have confirmed investigations are ongoing and additional or upgraded charges may be considered as more evidence is reviewed. Authorities are also examining whether the Giralang property may be connected to previous arson incidents targeting the same residence.
The incident has raised concerns among local residents about property safety and targeted attacks within Canberra suburbs. Giralang is a residential suburb in Canberra’s north, located near areas including Kaleen, Lawson and Belconnen.
