The Albanese Labor Government has announced a new domestic gas reservation scheme aimed at securing affordable gas supplies for Australian households and industries. Under the plan, gas exporters will be required to allocate 20 per cent of their export production to the domestic market starting from 1 July 2027. The joint announcement by Chris Bowen, Madeleine King, and Tim Ayres said the policy would reduce pressure on gas prices, strengthen energy security, and support Australian manufacturing during the transition to renewable energy. The government said existing export contracts would be respected while new domestic supply obligations would help avoid future gas shortages.
