The Shepparton Bears have celebrated a significant milestone for one of their most dependable players, with defender Bryce Stephenson reaching his 100th senior appearance for the club during a thrilling Goulburn Valley League victory over rivals Mooroopna.
Stephenson marked the occasion with another composed defensive performance, helping the Bears secure a dramatic 10.10 (70) to 10.8 (68) win at Deakin Reserve. The victory strengthened Shepparton's position at the top of the league ladder after 14 rounds, keeping the club firmly on track for a strong finals campaign.
Following the match, co-coach Jason Wells paid tribute to the 24-year-old, describing him as one of the club's most influential leaders despite his relatively young age.
Wells said Stephenson has become an integral part of the Bears since joining the club several years ago and has missed only two senior matches—one because of a broken leg suffered in a final and another following the birth of his child. His durability, consistency and leadership have made him one of the team's most respected players.
The coach highlighted Stephenson's ability to read the game, intercept opposition attacks and organise teammates in defence. According to Wells, those qualities have made him the "heartbeat" of Shepparton's backline and an important figure both on and off the field.
Stephenson's milestone came during one of the Bears' toughest victories of the season. The home side fought back after trailing in the final quarter and also overcame the challenge of playing with 17 men for part of the contest before claiming the narrow two-point win. Key forwards Zac Metcalf and Ashley Holland combined for six goals, but Wells said Stephenson's defensive work was equally crucial to the result.
Despite sitting on top of the ladder, Wells has warned against looking too far ahead to the finals. He reminded his players that the Bears still have four important home-and-away matches remaining, many against fellow finals contenders.
The coach noted that Shepparton's youthful list remains one of the youngest in the competition, with an average age of around 21 years and relatively limited senior experience. Because of that, he believes maintaining focus on one game at a time will be essential during the closing weeks of the season.
