Firefighters have worked through the night to contain a fast-moving bushfire at Wongawallan in the Gold Coast hinterland, with crews protecting homes as the fire continued burning through surrounding bushland.
A significant bushfire is continuing to burn at Wongawallan in Queensland’s Gold Coast hinterland, with firefighters remaining on the ground on Saturday, 19 September 2026, after a difficult overnight battle to contain the blaze.
The fire was first reported around midday on Friday near Wongawallan Drive. By Friday evening, more than 29 firefighting crews had been deployed to the area as emergency services worked to slow the spread and protect nearby properties. The fire moved through parts of the Coomera Valley, creating difficult conditions for crews working overnight.
Firefighters carried out backburning operations on the eastern side of the fire in an effort to establish containment lines and reduce the amount of vegetation available to the flames. Around 20 crews remained involved in operations into Saturday morning, with additional appliances working around properties along Wongawallan Drive and towards Soloman Lane.
The Coomera Valley Rural Fire Brigade said the fire front moved through the valley faster than anticipated overnight. Firefighters concentrated on protecting homes in the area, including properties along a section of Wongawallan Drive. Crews were able to stop the fire from reaching those homes, although the fire continued moving through a gully below the properties.
Authorities reported that the fire had covered approximately 180 acres. Despite the size and movement of the blaze, no injuries had been reported and authorities said no properties were under direct threat at the time of the Saturday morning update. Fire aircraft were also being used to map the fireground and help crews understand the location and movement of the fire.
Smoke has affected Wongawallan and surrounding areas. Queensland Fire Department information published through ABC Emergency advised residents to avoid exposure to thick smoke, remain indoors where possible and close windows and doors if smoke conditions became heavy. The official warning classified the incident as a vegetation fire and advised residents to continue checking for updates.
Fire authorities warned that there would be significant fire activity in the area during Saturday as crews continued containment and backburning work. Residents were urged to remain alert and immediately contact emergency services if a fire threatened their property and firefighters were not present.
