Emergency services responded to a significant house fire in Wagaman, Darwin, on Monday afternoon after flames were reported at a home on Coen Street. The incident began at approximately 1:30pm, according to the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre.

Firefighters from two fire stations attended the property alongside NT Police and St John Ambulance crews. When firefighters arrived, they found one end of the residence engulfed in flames and immediately began working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.

The fire generated intense heat and heavy smoke, with nearby residents reporting loud cracking and popping sounds as the blaze developed. Neighbours quickly raised the alarm and contacted emergency services after noticing smoke and flames coming from the property.

One nearby family said their four-year-old child was among the first people to notice the smoke. The family initially believed a warning sound might have been related to cooking, but quickly realised there was a fire at the neighbouring property.

Another neighbour attempted to determine whether anyone was inside the house before emergency crews arrived. Concerned residents reported seeing flames increase rapidly and feared the fire could potentially spread to nearby homes.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to one end of the residence. However, the affected section of the house suffered significant fire and smoke damage. A heavy rescue crane was later brought to the scene to assist crews in assessing damage to the roof.

Importantly, the residence was unoccupied when the fire occurred, and there were no reported injuries. St John Ambulance paramedics assessed five people at the scene, but none required treatment or transport to hospital.

NT Police closed part of the road while emergency services worked at the property. The road closure was necessary to provide a safe working area for firefighters, police and other emergency personnel responding to the incident.

After the fire was brought under control, investigators attended the property to begin determining how the blaze started. A fire investigator and detectives were seen at the scene, and authorities said a report would be prepared following a full examination of the property.

At this stage, the cause of the fire has not been confirmed. Investigators will examine the damaged areas of the house and available evidence before determining whether the fire was accidental or resulted from another cause.

The incident caused concern among residents because of the speed at which the fire appeared to develop. Witnesses described intense flames, thick smoke and repeated cracking sounds coming from the property.

The response demonstrates the importance of rapid emergency calls when a house fire is detected. Nearby residents contacted Triple Zero after seeing the smoke and flames, allowing fire crews to respond quickly.

Although the home was significantly damaged, the fact that it was unoccupied meant there were no reported injuries to people inside. The five people assessed by paramedics were treated as a precaution and did not require further medical care.

The investigation into the cause remains ongoing. Residents should continue to follow directions from emergency services if roads around the area remain restricted while investigators complete their work.

For the homeowners, the fire has resulted in substantial damage to their property, including fire and smoke damage and damage to the roof. The full extent of the structural damage will become clearer after the building is assessed.
