Former Mount Gambier Man Jailed After Drug Bust on Bus - Mount Gambier, SA

Police attended Adelaide Central Bus Station shortly before 8am and detained Patzel before he could board the bus. A search was conducted under South Australian drug legislation.
During the search, officers found a backpack containing multiple vacuum-sealed and press-sealed bags containing a white crystalline substance that police identified as appearing to be methamphetamine. Further quantities of the substance were allegedly concealed in other containers.
Police also located a bottle containing a clear liquid that appeared to be GHB, along with drug-related paraphernalia.
More than $40,000 in cash was also seized. Court evidence indicated that a large portion of the money was bundled together, adding to the seriousness of the offending considered by the court.
The prosecution case focused on the trafficking of methamphetamine and the potential harm associated with the distribution of illicit drugs. The court considered the quantity of drugs, how they had been packaged and the substantial amount of cash found in Patzel's possession when assessing the seriousness of the offending.
Judge Domenico Petraccaro also considered Patzel's personal circumstances and previous criminal activity during sentencing.
The court ultimately determined that the offending was too serious for the sentence to be served through home detention.
Patzel was sentenced to a period of imprisonment with a non-parole period of at least two years and eight months.
The case has a direct connection to Mount Gambier because Patzel had spent much of his life in the city and the drugs were allegedly being transported on a bus bound for Mount Gambier.
