Sydney mother and Coogee local Leah Stewart is continuing her recovery more than two months after a serious shark attack that left her with life-threatening injuries.

On June 13, Stewart was swimming close to shore and between the flags at Coogee Beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs when she was attacked by what authorities and reports described as a white shark, believed to have been around 3.5 metres long. She was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital in critical condition after suffering multiple bites, fractures and severe blood loss. Her injuries required extensive medical treatment, including several surgeries, life support and the amputation of one arm.

Her remaining arm also suffered significant tendon and nerve damage, requiring further rehabilitation. Earlier updates from her family described the difficult period in hospital and her gradual improvement. Now, Stewart has spoken about her experience and recovery for the first time. She said the past few months had been incredibly difficult, but she was grateful to have progressed far enough to regain some independence and begin seeing a path forward.

Stewart described her survival as a “second chance at life”, saying she does not intend to waste the opportunity. Her words have resonated with people across Australia and internationally, particularly because of her determination to recover while caring for her young daughter. Her family had previously provided regular updates during her hospitalisation. Stewart's first public message has now offered supporters a more personal insight into her recovery and outlook.

Community support has also played an important role. A fundraising campaign established for Stewart and her family has raised more than $500,000, with the money intended to assist with rehabilitation, ongoing medical care, prosthetics and the major adjustments involved in rebuilding her life after the attack.

The June attack shocked the Coogee community, with lifesavers, emergency responders, medical workers and local residents praised for their rapid response. Stewart's family previously said the immediate first aid she received on the beach was crucial to saving her life.

Although Stewart still faces a long rehabilitation journey, her latest message presents a hopeful picture of recovery. Her story has become one of resilience, family, community support and determination following one of Sydney's most serious recent shark attacks.
