A 41-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy have been charged after an alleged police pursuit involving a stolen Mercedes that was later found burning in Newcastle.
A man and a teenage boy have been charged following an alleged police pursuit involving a stolen Mercedes-Benz station wagon in the Newcastle region of New South Wales. The investigation began after a break-in at a home in Redhead, where a handbag, car keys and the vehicle were reportedly stolen.
According to New South Wales Police, the break-in occurred at a property on Sea Scape Drive on Sunday, 25 October 2026. Officers attached to Operation Soteria began investigating and received information that the stolen Mercedes had been seen at a shopping centre in Kotara.
At approximately 9am on Monday, 26 October, officers attended the shopping centre and located the vehicle in the car park. Police approached the Mercedes and attempted to remove the driver and passenger.
Investigators allege that the driver reversed the vehicle, causing a car door to strike a police officer, before the Mercedes collided with a police car. The officer sustained minor injuries and did not require further medical treatment.
Police then attempted to stop the vehicle. According to the police account, the driver failed to stop, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit. The pursuit was terminated shortly afterwards because of safety concerns.
A short time later, emergency services received reports of a vehicle fire on Hill Street in North Lambton. Fire and Rescue NSW crews attended and extinguished the blaze. Police subsequently seized the Mercedes for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
Following inquiries, officers arrested a 41-year-old man at a home on Station Street in Wickham at approximately 3.30pm on Monday. He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with eight alleged offences.
The charges against the man include failing to stop during a police pursuit and driving dangerously, allegedly using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, aggravated damage to a motor vehicle by fire or explosion, driving a vehicle taken without the owner's consent, and two counts of driving while disqualified. He also faces additional alleged offences.
At approximately 4.20pm, police arrested a 16-year-old boy at a motel on Newcastle Road in Jesmond. He was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with 13 alleged offences.
The teenager's charges include failing to stop during a police pursuit and driving recklessly, aggravated break and enter, entering premises with intent to commit an indictable offence, property damage by fire or explosion, offences involving a vehicle taken without the owner's consent, and breach of bail.
Both the man and the teenager were refused bail and were scheduled to appear before the relevant courts on Tuesday, 27 October.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged break-in, the pursuit, the collision with the police vehicle and the subsequent fire. The cause of the fire has not been established in the available police report.
The incident highlights the risks that can arise when drivers allegedly fail to stop for police, as well as the importance of forensic examinations in investigations involving suspected stolen vehicles and fires.
All charges remain allegations. The accused individuals are entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in court.
