A man has been charged following the death of a 66-year-old man after an alleged assault at a park in Brisbane's inner-south. Queensland Police allege the incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, 5 July 2026, at Bunyapa Park, located near the corner of Thomas Street and Vulture Street in West End.
According to investigators, the alleged altercation involved two men who did not know each other. Police allege that a 27-year-old Yeronga man struck the older man during the confrontation, causing him to fall and suffer a severe head injury. Emergency services attended the scene and transported the injured man to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Following an investigation, detectives arrested the 27-year-old in Fortitude Valley on Sunday evening. He has been charged with one count of unlawful striking causing death as well as two counts of possessing dangerous drugs. The accused was scheduled to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday, 6 July 2026.
Police established a crime scene at the park while forensic officers examined the area for evidence. Investigators collected photographs, physical evidence and witness statements as part of the inquiry. Authorities are also reviewing any available CCTV footage and have appealed for members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or captured relevant footage to come forward.
Residents living near the park reported hearing shouting and sounds of a disturbance during the early hours of Sunday morning. While some neighbours said arguments occasionally occur in the area, they described this incident as more serious due to the large police response and forensic investigation that followed.
Police have stressed that the charges are allegations and will be tested through the court process. Under Australian law, every accused person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue gathering evidence surrounding the circumstances of the fatal incident.
The case has renewed attention on public safety in Brisbane's inner-city parks and the serious consequences that can result from violent altercations. Authorities have encouraged anyone with information that may assist investigators to contact Queensland Police or Crime Stoppers.
