A 22-year-old man has been charged after a police pursuit involving an allegedly stolen Toyota utility near Moree in northern New South Wales. NSW Police published the update on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, confirming that the investigation followed an incident the previous day.

Police said officers from the New England Police District attempted to stop the Toyota utility at about midday on Monday, September 14. The vehicle was travelling on Carrigan Road at Boomi, approximately 90 kilometres north-west of Moree. Officers had reportedly received information that the vehicle had allegedly been stolen from an address in Queensland earlier that same day.

According to police, the driver failed to stop when directed, resulting in the commencement of a police pursuit. The pursuit continued through farmland and along several roads in the surrounding area. Police said the vehicle travelled through the vicinity of Carrigan Road, Dolgelly Road, Letter Box Road and the Newell Highway before eventually entering bushland.

Following further inquiries, police located the vehicle in nearby bushland with assistance from members of the local community. The Toyota was seized and is expected to undergo forensic examination as investigators continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police, assisted by the Dog Unit, subsequently located and arrested a 22-year-old man nearby. Officers allegedly found five rounds of ammunition in his possession during the investigation.

The man was taken to Moree Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. After receiving medical attention, he was taken to Moree Police Station, where he was formally charged with three offences.

The charges include failing to stop during a police pursuit and driving at speed, possessing ammunition without a licence, permit or authority, and receiving property allegedly stolen outside New South Wales with a value greater than $15,000.

Police said the man was refused bail and was due to face Bail Division Court 5 on Tuesday, September 15.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged vehicle theft, the pursuit and the subsequent arrest. The vehicle has been seized for forensic examination, which may assist investigators in determining its connection to the reported theft and events leading up to the pursuit.

The incident demonstrates the role of coordinated police operations and community assistance in locating vehicles and suspects following alleged thefts and pursuits. The involvement of the Dog Unit also assisted officers in locating the arrested man after the vehicle had been abandoned in bushland.

The charges are allegations, and the accused man is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in court.
