A man has been charged with multiple serious offences following an alleged police chase through Wellington in central western New South Wales. Police allege the incident began when officers attempted to stop a vehicle that was being driven without proper lighting, leading to a pursuit and a search that resulted in the discovery of firearms and other items.
According to police, officers were conducting patrols near the Mitchell Highway when they noticed a Toyota sedan travelling without tail lights. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly failed to comply, resulting in a pursuit through the Wellington area.
The pursuit continued through local roads before the vehicle was allegedly abandoned in a rural area. Police say the driver left the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot before officers located and arrested him following a short chase.
Following the arrest, police conducted searches of the vehicle and nearby areas. Officers allege they located firearms, ammunition, suspected drug-related items, registration plates and tools believed to be connected with unlawful activity.
The accused man, identified as Jarod Andrew Jon Oats, has been charged with multiple offences, including possessing unauthorised firearms, possessing unregistered firearms, possessing ammunition without a licence, police pursuit, dangerous driving, excessive speeding, drug possession and possession of housebreaking implements.
The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns around illegal firearms and dangerous driving offences in regional communities. Police regularly conduct targeted operations to identify and remove illegal weapons from circulation and investigate offences that may pose risks to public safety.
