A Victorian man has appeared before Wangaratta Magistrates' Court as police continue investigating an alleged attack on independent federal MP Helen Haines. Court documents revealed additional charges relating to alleged cannabis cultivation and possession.

Brendan Nugent, 43, appeared in court on Wednesday. He was already facing charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official in connection with the alleged incident involving Haines outside her electorate office.

The newly reported drug charges relate to alleged offences in Tarrawingee, where Nugent lives. Court documents listed the alleged offences as occurring on 20 October 2026. The details of the drug allegations were not fully discussed during the brief court appearance.

Nugent's lawyer told the court that his client had a rare neurological condition and had been experiencing concussion. The lawyer also raised concerns about his client's health and said he was not currently taking medication. These statements were made by the defence and do not determine the outcome of the criminal proceedings.

No application for bail was made during the hearing. The court directed that police complete a brief of evidence by 24 December, with the case scheduled to return to court on 4 February 2027 for a committal mention hearing.

Police have said their investigation into the alleged attack remains ongoing and have not ruled out further serious charges. Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including any potential motive. They have cautioned that the investigation is not complete.

The case has attracted significant public attention because it involves a sitting federal parliamentarian. It has also prompted discussion about security for elected representatives and the importance of allowing the criminal justice process to proceed on the basis of evidence.

All charges remain allegations, and Nugent is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The additional drug charges are separate allegations from those relating to the incident involving Haines.

The next stage of the case will involve the preparation and review of evidence before further court proceedings. Police have indicated that they will continue investigating all relevant aspects of the matter.
