New South Wales Police are investigating an alleged armed incident in Sydney’s inner west after a shotgun reportedly used to threaten witnesses remained missing following the arrest of a suspect.

Police were called to a car park in Dulwich Hill on Friday, 16 October, at approximately 10:20 am following reports of a man carrying a shotgun. Investigators allege that the man had set fire to a stolen vehicle and threatened three witnesses with the firearm. The incident prompted police to establish a perimeter and temporarily lock down part of the surrounding area.

Emergency services attended the scene, and Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the burning vehicle. Police later confirmed that the car had been stolen from Marrickville several days before the incident.

The man allegedly left the scene on foot, triggering a search by officers. Investigators established Strike Force Ranilo to examine the circumstances and identify the person involved.

On Sunday night, police arrested a 32-year-old man in Burwood after he allegedly attempted to evade officers. He reportedly sustained a minor injury during the arrest and received treatment before being released from hospital.

The man was subsequently charged in relation to the incident. Police have not recovered the shotgun they believe was used during the alleged threats, making locating the weapon a priority for investigators.

The missing firearm has raised concerns because authorities do not yet know where it is or whether it could pose a further risk. Police have not publicly established what the suspect allegedly intended to do with the weapon.

The investigation includes examining the circumstances surrounding the stolen vehicle, the fire and the alleged threats against witnesses. Investigators will also need to determine the sequence of events and gather evidence to support the charges.

Incidents involving firearms can require substantial police resources because officers must secure the area, protect witnesses and search for potentially dangerous weapons. A missing shotgun also complicates the investigation because it may contain forensic evidence relevant to the case.

The arrest represents a significant development, but it does not mean the investigation is complete. Police are still seeking information that could help locate the firearm and clarify what happened in Dulwich Hill.

The accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The allegations will be considered through the criminal justice process, and police have not established a final motive for the incident.
