Melbourne has been ranked the fourth-best city in the world for nightlife in 2026, according to a new Time Out ranking released on Thursday, 27 August. The result also places Melbourne as the highest-ranked Australian city on the global list, highlighting the Victorian capital’s strong reputation for bars, pubs, live music, clubs and late-night entertainment.

The ranking was based on responses from more than 24,000 people around the world, with local residents asked about their city’s nightlife. Participants considered several factors, including the overall quality of nightlife, affordability, community atmosphere, safety, excitement, diversity and how welcoming the city feels after dark. Time Out editors and cultural experts then used the survey results to compile the final global ranking.

Melbourne received particularly strong feedback from its own residents. According to the ranking, 77 per cent of Melbourne locals described the city’s nightlife as good or amazing, while 59 per cent gave the city a high rating for its sense of community. These results indicate that Melbourne’s appeal extends beyond simply having a large number of venues, with residents also valuing the social atmosphere and variety available after sunset.

The city’s pubs and cocktail bars were among the areas that received the strongest approval. Time Out reported that 72 per cent of locals identified casual pubs as one of Melbourne’s nightlife strengths, while 61 per cent highlighted cocktail bars. The combination gives residents and visitors a broad range of options, from relaxed evenings with friends to more energetic nights involving music and dancing.

Melbourne’s nightlife is spread across many different neighbourhoods rather than being concentrated in one entertainment district. Visitors can find traditional pubs, small bars, live-music venues, cocktail lounges, clubs and community-focused entertainment spaces across the city and its inner suburbs.

The city’s diverse cultural scene is another factor contributing to its nightlife reputation. Live music, comedy, theatre, festivals and other cultural activities regularly add to the number of things happening after dark. Time Out noted that Melbourne offers different experiences depending on what visitors are looking for, from casual drinks and live performances to club nights and LGBTQIA+-friendly events.

The global ranking placed Bangkok first, followed by Berlin in second place and New York City in third. Melbourne came fourth, ahead of São Paulo, Medellín and Johannesburg. Brighton, Beijing and Amsterdam completed the remainder of the top ten.

The result comes during a busy period for Melbourne’s cultural and entertainment calendar. The city is currently hosting Now or Never, a major winter festival featuring art, ideas, sound and technology, with more than 250 local and international artists involved across venues and public spaces.

There are also numerous live performances and events taking place across Melbourne this week, adding to the city’s active after-dark environment. Current listings show hundreds of gigs across venues during the week beginning 27 August.

The ranking provides another international recognition of Melbourne’s reputation as a cultural and entertainment destination. It also highlights the variety available to people who want to experience the city after dark.
