The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) in North Fitzroy, Melbourne, has been targeted in an overnight break-in that resulted in two catering vans being stolen, causing significant disruption to the organisation's social enterprise.

The incident occurred at about 3:30am, with CCTV footage released by the centre showing people approaching the building before allegedly forcing their way inside. Footage reportedly shows masked individuals using a hammer to damage doors and gain access to the premises.

During the break-in, the offenders allegedly smashed a roller door, damaged a safe and stole money and food from the centre. Two vans used by the ASRC's catering operation were also taken. The vehicles are valued at more than $100,000 combined.

The stolen vans play an important role in the organisation's catering social enterprise, which provides employment opportunities for more than 100 refugees and people seeking asylum. The vehicles are used to support catering operations and deliver services to customers.

The loss has therefore affected more than the organisation's vehicle fleet. The ASRC said the stolen vans are essential to keeping its catering business operating and maintaining employment for workers involved in the social enterprise.
