Melbourne has become home to one of the world's most prestigious jewellery exhibitions, with the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) opening its highly anticipated CARTIER exhibition as part of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces 2026 program.
The Australian-exclusive exhibition features nearly 400 extraordinary jewels, timepieces and decorative objects, tracing the evolution of the iconic French luxury house from the early 20th century through to the present day.
Hosted at NGV International on St Kilda Road, the exhibition showcases pieces commissioned, owned and worn by royalty, aristocrats, Hollywood stars and influential cultural figures throughout history.
Visitors can explore the story of how the Cartier family transformed a Paris jewellery business founded in 1847 into one of the most recognised luxury brands in the world.
The exhibition has been created by London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in partnership with the NGV and in collaboration with Cartier, bringing together exceptional loans from international museums, private collections and the renowned Cartier Collection.
Among the highlights are historic tiaras, intricate brooches, elegant necklaces, iconic Tank watches and rare gemstones, alongside design drawings, sketchbooks and archival photographs that provide insight into Cartier's creative process.
The exhibition also explores the people behind the jewellery house's success, including Louis Cartier and Jeanne Toussaint, the influential artistic director who helped define the brand's distinctive style during the mid-20th century.
The Melbourne exhibition also highlights Australia's connection to Cartier, featuring pieces incorporating Australian opals and exploring the relationship between the celebrated jeweller and legendary Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba.
The exhibition design itself has been carefully crafted to enhance the visitor experience. Developed by Studio Sabine Marcelis and architecture practice CLOUD, each gallery space has been inspired by the qualities of precious gemstones, using light, colour and texture to immerse audiences in Cartier's world.
The opening has attracted significant public interest, with Melbourne's arts community and high-profile guests gathering to celebrate the arrival of one of the city's most glamorous cultural events of the year.
Running from 12 June to 4 October 2026, the exhibition is expected to draw visitors from across Australia and overseas.
NGV Director Tony Ellwood has previously described the showcase as the largest Cartier exhibition ever staged in Australia, providing an unprecedented opportunity for audiences to appreciate the craftsmanship, innovation and artistic legacy of the famed jewellery maison.
For Melbourne, the exhibition reinforces the city's reputation as a major destination for international arts and cultural experiences.
For visitors, it offers a rare chance to stand just centimetres away from some of the world's most extraordinary creations — objects that have adorned kings, queens, movie stars and fashion icons for more than a century.
Whether admired as works of art, symbols of luxury or reflections of changing social history, the pieces featured in CARTIER promise an unforgettable journey through beauty, craftsmanship and timeless design.
