New South Wales Police have announced the results of Operation Percentile, a large-scale retail crime enforcement operation conducted across Sydney. The results, released today, show that police charged 116 people with a total of 130 offences following two days of coordinated action targeting retail theft, assaults on shop workers and organised criminal activity.

The operation was carried out across several major shopping centres, retail precincts and transport hubs throughout Sydney. Police worked closely with shopping centre security teams, retail businesses and loss-prevention officers to identify repeat offenders and organised shoplifting groups responsible for stealing high-value goods from stores.

During the operation, officers arrested dozens of suspects and recovered a variety of stolen property, including clothing, cosmetics, groceries, alcohol, handbags and other retail items. Authorities also issued 65 criminal infringement notices, 106 banning notices, 10 youth cautions and 27 formal warnings. Knife detection operations conducted at Parramatta and Hornsby railway stations resulted in several prohibited weapons being seized, while officers also detected a number of drug-related offences.

Police say assaults against retail employees continue to be a growing concern, with many workers facing threats or violence when attempting to stop shoplifters. Officials stressed that protecting retail staff remains a priority and warned that offenders who assault workers will face strong legal action.

According to investigators, organised retail theft has become increasingly sophisticated, with some criminal groups targeting multiple stores across Sydney before attempting to sell stolen goods for profit. Operation Percentile was designed to disrupt these criminal networks while also reducing opportunistic shoplifting and improving public safety.

NSW Police stated that the operation forms part of an ongoing statewide strategy that has already resulted in more than 1,300 people being charged since the initiative began. Thousands of offences have been investigated, and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stolen property has been recovered.

Police praised the cooperation between law enforcement agencies, retailers and shopping centre management, saying the partnership played an important role in identifying offenders and preventing further crimes. Authorities also encouraged businesses to continue reporting suspicious behaviour and to use available security technologies such as CCTV and electronic theft detection systems.
