Northern Territory Police have launched an investigation following the theft of a Toyota Yaris from Traeger Avenue in Alice Springs on Tuesday evening. The incident has prompted an appeal for witnesses, CCTV footage and dashcam recordings as officers work to identify those responsible and determine the full circumstances surrounding the vehicle theft.

According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 8:00pm when the owner briefly stopped at a property on Traeger Avenue in The Gap. The driver reportedly left the vehicle running with the keys in the ignition while quickly going inside. During that time, unknown offenders allegedly entered the vehicle and drove away.

A young child was still inside the Toyota Yaris when it was taken. Police said the offenders travelled only a short distance before stopping and allowing the child to get out of the vehicle. The child was not physically injured but was understandably distressed by the incident. Emergency services confirmed the child was safely reunited with family members shortly afterwards.

Police immediately began searching for the stolen vehicle, with patrol officers conducting inquiries across Alice Springs. The Toyota Yaris was later located abandoned south of the town later that evening.
