Detectives from Victoria Police's Homicide Squad have released CCTV footage as they intensify investigations into the fatal shooting of Hussein Dehaini, who was gunned down in Ascot Vale during the early hours of Sunday morning.
The 33-year-old, also known as "Skinny" or "Huss", was walking along Mount Alexander Road at about 12:15am when he was approached by a gunman who fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene in a white sedan. Police believe the attack was targeted.
According to investigators, Dehaini suffered serious gunshot wounds but managed to move more than 100 metres from the initial shooting location. CCTV footage and forensic evidence indicate he staggered along Mount Alexander Road before collapsing near a Woolworths Metro loading area on North Street. He was transported to hospital in a critical condition but later died from his injuries.
The newly released footage shows a white sedan believed to have been used during the incident. In the video, the vehicle is seen travelling at speed through a roundabout and narrowly avoiding a pedestrian. Police are particularly interested in speaking with the pedestrian, who is being treated solely as a witness and is not believed to have any involvement in the shooting.
Investigators are urging anyone who may have seen the white sedan in the Ascot Vale, Footscray or Maribyrnong areas around the time of the shooting to come forward. Authorities are also seeking information regarding the vehicle's current whereabouts.
Forensic teams have examined several pieces of evidence linked to the investigation, including a white Alfa Romeo found near the scene. Detectives spent much of Sunday collecting evidence, reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing potential witnesses as they work to reconstruct the events leading up to the attack.
Dehaini was previously known within Melbourne's boxing community, having competed professionally as a middleweight between 2014 and 2019. Following his sporting career, he became known to police through investigations into organised crime activity. Reports indicate he had previously faced firearm-related charges and had been linked to outlaw motorcycle gang associates.
The killing is the latest in a series of high-profile shootings linked to Melbourne's criminal underworld. Police have not announced any arrests and continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.
