Police are reviewing evidence presented to a New South Wales parliamentary inquiry after former YMCA camp manager Steve Smith claimed a former holiday campsite near Crangan Bay could be connected to several long-unsolved disappearances from the late 1970s. Smith told the inquiry he discovered suspicious items while leading boys on a hike through bushland in 1979, including a large knife embedded in a tree, a trenching shovel and disturbed soil. The site was located near a YMCA campground between Budgewoi and Swansea in the Lake Macquarie region. The claims have drawn renewed attention because the discoveries occurred around the same time three young women vanished without explanation: Leanne Goodall in 1978, Robyn Hickie in 1979 and Amanda Robinson shortly afterwards. Smith has urged authorities to conduct a formal search of the former campsite area. NSW Police confirmed they are reviewing the information supplied to the parliamentary inquiry investigating cold cases dating back to 1965.
