A 51-year-old Queensland man has been charged with allegedly bribing a foreign public official in connection with an ongoing investigation into the death of his estranged wife in Bangladesh.

Australian Federal Police arrested the man on Tuesday and carried out searches at properties in Goodna and Redbank Plains, west of Brisbane. Investigators also examined financial records in Brisbane and Sydney as part of the investigation.

Police allege the man transferred more than $90,000 to people in Bangladesh over a period of about two years. Investigators allege the money was intended to influence the investigation into his estranged wife's death, including an attempt to have his name removed from police records.

The man's estranged wife, Rehana Parvin, was an Australian citizen and mother of five. Her body was discovered in a village in Bangladesh in September 2024 after she had been reported missing.

Bangladeshi authorities subsequently provided information to Australian investigators indicating that the circumstances surrounding her death were suspicious. A separate investigation into her death remains underway in Bangladesh.

The Australian Federal Police also began investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. During that investigation, authorities allegedly identified financial transactions that they say may have been connected to attempts to influence the overseas investigation.

The Queensland man has not been charged with his wife's death in Australia. Bangladeshi police have issued an arrest warrant concerning the death, but the Australian investigation and the Bangladeshi investigation remain separate from the current bribery charge.

Police searched properties in Goodna and Redbank Plains after the man's arrest and seized an electronic device for forensic examination. Investigators also examined financial records connected with international money transfers.

The man has been charged with one count of bribing a foreign public official. The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.

He remained in custody in Brisbane after the matter was adjourned, with a bail application expected to be considered by the court.

His lawyer has indicated that the man denies the allegations and intends to contest the charge. The defence has also raised concerns about the evidence supporting the prosecution case.

The bribery investigation is significant because Australian authorities say it is the first time the Australian Federal Police has brought an allegation of foreign bribery of a public official for personal advantage before an Australian court.

Investigators say the alleged financial arrangements were uncovered during the broader investigation into Rehana Parvin's death. Authorities continue to work with international partners as they examine the circumstances surrounding the case.

The investigation remains active in both Australia and Bangladesh. The bribery allegations have not been proven in court, and the accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.

Further court proceedings are expected to determine whether the bribery charge proceeds and whether the accused is granted bail.

Authorities have said the investigation into the woman's death continues separately, with investigators still working to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.
