Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged domestic violence murder of Mallorie Jane Roberts, with new attention focused on how the young Gold Coast mother came into a relationship with the man now accused of killing her.
The 23-year-old was found critically injured at a unit on Loder Street, Biggera Waters, on the northern Gold Coast on the evening of 29 June. Emergency services were called to the property shortly after 8pm after reports that a woman had suffered serious injuries. Despite desperate attempts by neighbours, paramedics and emergency responders to save her life, Roberts died at the scene.
Police allege her de facto partner, Ethan Sage Midgley, also 23, shot Roberts with an unregistered homemade handgun. He was arrested at the scene without incident and has since been charged with one count of murder and an additional firearms offence relating to the alleged weapon. Midgley has not entered a plea, and the allegations against him are yet to be tested in court. Under Australian law, he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
As detectives continue their investigation, questions remain about how Midgley became part of Roberts' life. Friends and relatives have described Roberts as a devoted mother with a caring personality, while neighbours said little was publicly known about the couple before the tragedy. Investigators are examining the history of their relationship, previous interactions with police and the circumstances leading up to the fatal incident.
Detective Acting Inspector Leia Urquhart confirmed the pair were living together at the Biggera Waters unit and acknowledged police had attended the address previously. However, she said investigators are still determining the significance of earlier police interactions as part of the broader homicide investigation. Authorities have appealed to anyone who knew either Roberts or Midgley, or who may have information about their relationship, to contact police.
The death has deeply affected Roberts' family and the wider Gold Coast community. Tributes have described her as a kind-hearted young woman and devoted mother whose life was cut tragically short. Friends have established an online fundraising campaign to assist her family with funeral costs and ongoing support for her young son, who was not at the property when the incident occurred.
The case has once again drawn attention to domestic and family violence across Australia. Advocacy groups say the tragedy highlights the importance of early intervention, support services and community awareness in preventing violence against women. Queensland Police have reiterated that anyone experiencing domestic or family violence should seek assistance and report concerns as early as possible.
Midgley appeared briefly before the Southport Magistrates Court via administrative proceedings, where his matter was adjourned. He remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court in July while police continue gathering forensic evidence, witness statements and digital material. Investigators have not released further details about the alleged motive, saying inquiries remain ongoing.
