A 27-year-old Victorian man who holds Russian-Australian citizenship has been arrested in southwest Brisbane and charged with attempting to intentionally engage in foreign interference, in a major national-security investigation.

The man was arrested in Sumner, Brisbane, on Thursday following an investigation by the Counter Foreign Interference Task Force, a joint operation involving Australia's security and law-enforcement agencies.

He is scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today, 21 August 2026. The Australian Federal Police is also expected to provide further information about the investigation.

The Counter Foreign Interference Task Force works to investigate serious threats to Australia's national interests. The task force involved in this case includes agencies such as the AFP and ASIO, along with other Australian intelligence and financial-security organisations.

The arrest comes amid continuing Australian government concerns about foreign interference and espionage threats. Authorities have increasingly focused on attempts by foreign actors to influence Australian institutions, communities and national-security interests.

At this stage, the allegations against the accused remain matters for the court. Being charged does not establish guilt, and the accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The case is expected to attract significant national-security attention as investigators provide further information about the alleged conduct and the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
