A major weather system moving east across Australia has brought unsettled conditions to the Albury-Wodonga region, with authorities warning of widespread rain and the possibility of heavy falls across parts of inland New South Wales and Victoria.

The system has already produced significant rainfall across South Australia before moving towards southeastern Australia. Forecast information indicates that areas around Albury-Wodonga could receive substantial rainfall as the system passes through.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Wednesday forecast for Albury was partly cloudy, with a maximum temperature around 19°C and only a slight chance of rain locally.

However, the broader weather system has created a risk of heavier rainfall in surrounding areas, with thunderstorms and strong winds possible in parts of the region.

Residents are being encouraged to monitor updated weather warnings, particularly if travelling on regional roads. Wet conditions can reduce visibility and increase the risk of difficult driving conditions.

The weather system is part of a larger area of unstable conditions affecting New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory. Some inland areas have already recorded significant rainfall, while further falls are expected as the system moves east.
