Two teenagers have been arrested following an alleged dangerous-driving incident that caused concern across the Katherine community, with Northern Territory Police continuing to investigate the incident and identify other people allegedly involved.

Police allege a group of youths stole a black Volkswagen hatchback on Thursday afternoon before driving it dangerously through Katherine. The vehicle was reportedly seen travelling around the town and along the Victoria Highway, with police alleging that some of the youths were hanging out of the vehicle's windows.

The driving behaviour reportedly created significant risks for other road users and pedestrians. Police said the vehicle came close to hitting people during the incident, raising concerns about the potential for a serious collision.

Officers attempted to bring the vehicle to a stop. However, police reportedly decided not to pursue the vehicle because of concerns that a high-speed pursuit could create an even greater danger to members of the public.

Police deployed spike strips during the incident, but the vehicle continued travelling before eventually crashing into a fence. The occupants then allegedly fled from the vehicle on foot.

Following the crash, police began working to identify those who had been inside the stolen vehicle. Two boys, aged 13 and 15, were subsequently arrested.

The younger teenager has been charged with offences including car theft and dangerous driving. The 15-year-old has been charged with riding in a stolen car and an alleged breach of bail.

Police are continuing their investigation and are attempting to identify other youths who may have been involved in the incident. Further arrests or charges may follow as investigators gather additional evidence.

The incident has caused concern among Katherine residents, particularly because of the alleged risks created by the dangerous driving. Katherine residents have previously raised concerns about youth crime and stolen vehicles in the community.
